Hike: Lime Rock Nature Preserve

Length: 2 miles
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy
Trailhead location: Wilbur Road, Lincoln, RI

To get the 2014 Hike/Bike season started, we went to the Lime Rock Nature Preserve in Lincoln. This was described by the trusty Ken Weber in the 4th edition of Weekend Walks in Rhode Island. As with everything else in this state, it was about a 20 minute drive to get there. We missed a turn, but were able to get there from the other end of the road instead. It was the scenic route, I suppose.

After we parked at the trailhead, E was strapped into her backpack with Rich, and J was snuggled in his wrap with me. The first part of the trail follows an old rail line, and Mr. Weber suggested taking an elevated, parallel trail as this one is often wet and muddy. Foolishly, we disregarded his advice, as I figured it hadn't rained recently, so why would it be wet? At first, no problem. Soon thereafter, mud. Thankfully, we were able to walk across a fallen tree to get to the parallel, and dry, alternate route.

The rest of the trail looped around a small pond, and featured some spiffy ledges, and an earthen dam. Overall, this trail was pretty flat, and very easy to follow. Round trip, it was about 2 miles, and took us about an hour. This one will be a good one to return to when the kids are a bit older, and able to walk it themselves, as there weren't many challenges to it.
